Since upgrading to Magisk v28 (or build 070719db, version code 28001), I've been encountering an issue with modifying the etc/host file permissions when using ad blocking apps like Adaway. Adaway works by updating the etc/host file to block ad servers, but a large file can cause browsing slowdown. Traditionally, users have addressed this by changing the file permissions in ES File Explorer (or similar file managers) to remove the 'read' permission for 'other' users. This was successful with older Magisk versions (e.g., v27). However, with Magisk v28, I get an error message 'Sorry the operation failed' when attempting to modify the permissions.
I've tried using other file managers such as 'Root Explorer' but faced the same issue. Reverting back to Magisk v27 allows me to change the permissions and disable the 'read' permission for 'other' users without problems.
Has Magisk v28 introduced any changes impacting the ability to modify etc/host file permissions? Understanding the cause of this issue would help in finding a solution to continue using Adaway effectively.
