I recently embarked on an experiment, sideloading Snapchat onto my Samsung Galaxy Watch 7. The result was a fascinating mix of functionality and limitations. While I was thrilled to see some core Snapchat features working on the watch, certain aspects fell short of expectations.
Snapchat on the Watch 7: What Works and What Doesn't
It's important to note that my goal wasn't to use the watch for snapping pictures (cameras on watches are still a distant dream!). I simply wanted to explore the potential for sending voice messages and casually engaging in chats.
Here's a breakdown of what I encountered:
**Positive Surprises:**
- Basic Snapchat functionality is surprisingly available.
- Voice message sending appears to work smoothly.
**Areas for Improvement:**
- **Chat Bar:** The chat bar obstructs the entire conversation UI. Although I can see my friend's name and the call buttons, the message area is hidden behind the input field.
- **Snapmap Disruptions:** Snapmap, while attempting to use the watch's location, experiences glitches that prevent friend location display. I can search for places and navigate the map, but the friend location feature remains broken.
- **UI Sizing:** Several UI elements appear unnecessarily large for the watch's screen, leaving considerable unused space.
**User Feedback:**
While Snapchat on a watch might seem like a niche use case, I believe it holds potential, especially for quick communication in classroom settings without resorting to a phone.
**Development Suggestions:**
I recommend prioritizing these issues for future development:
1. Resizing the chat bar to allow for proper message viewability.
2. Fixing Snapmap functionality to accurately display friend locations.
3. Optimizing UI element sizes for better screen utilization.
I'm happy to assist in testing any future updates, using either my physical watch or the Android Studio emulator, whenever needed.
